When designing for aging adults, one key problem that needs to be addressed is the acoustics of a space. Acoustics are “the properties or qualities of a room or building that determine how sound is transmitted in it.” Because many aging adults start losing their hearing, it makes it even more vital to consider how sounds are traveling through the space.
In an article found on Buzzi Space, they explain how acoustics play a vital role in reducing difficulty understanding conversations with others, and distractions due to people speaking at the other end of large spaces. The main way to counteract noise pollution is to add absorption materials. Below we go through four types of sound absorption materials you can incorporate into your design to improve the acoustics of a room.

Acoustic panels have come a long way since they were first introduced. There are now hundreds of products that can easily be added to your space. They not only absorb unwanted sound but can provide a unique decorative element that looks more like art than an acoustical solution.

Reduce Overhead Space with Ceiling Panels

Like wall panels, there are a wide variety of ceiling acoustic panels on the market. Some of the most successful acoustic design solutions are integrating basic panels into a unique ceiling and lighting detail.

Integrate Window Treatments

When it comes to acoustics, really any soft surface/ materials are crucial for absorbing sound. Adding decorative window treatments are an aesthetically beautiful way to introduce more soft and sound absorbing elements to a space.

Add Cushions and Pillows

Like window treatments, upholstered furniture help absorb unwanted sound. Not only having upholstered pieces (like lounge chairs and sofas), but additional decorative pillows and cushions is an unexpected way to help with your room’s acoustics.
