25 March Senior Living Design Focus: Area Rugs Can Be Done!

Elegant lounge area with a stone fireplace, blue and patterned armchairs, and large windows. As part of the MorningStar of Applewood Renovation Project, the modern lighting and wood flooring create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

When designing for aging adults one key problem that needs to be addressed is the flooring of the space: specifically flooring transitions. Due to the high traffic nature of Senior Living Communities, it’s common to use resilient flooring such as LVT and tile, but that can leave the spaces feeling cold and stale. However, loose area rugs that would ultimately soften the space can then cause tripping hazards for individuals with walkers, scooters and other walking aids.

So how do we get around this design hazard?

Carpet Transitions

Lucky for us, both LVT and Carpet Materials have come a long way, as well as transitions. There are some manufacturers that are now using technology to chemically weld LVT and Carpet seams together for a seamless transition.

Alternatively, there are slim-profile metal transition strips that provide both a clean finish as well as simple segue between two different flooring materials.
